“Today I have accepted the resignation of Dr. Mary Cullinan, president of Southern Oregon University, as she transitions to her new role as president of Eastern Washington University, effective June 30, 2014.

Dr. Cullinan has made many contributions to the SOU community, the Oregon University System, and the State of Oregon in her seven year tenure at Southern. Besides increasing enrollment by more than 1,300 students, Dr. Cullinan has improved student success and retention, built transfer and co-enrollment programs between SOU and Rogue Community College, increased the diversity of the student body, and created innovative living/learning “Houses” to more fully integrate students’ experiences on campus. Dr. Cullinan also spent countless days in Salem over the years advocating for SOU students and the role of regional public universities.

“We wish Dr. Cullinan all the best as she moves to EWU and are pleased that she will remain in the Pacific Northwest as our neighbor and colleague. The Oregon University System will miss her strong voice for our students and our public universities.

“I will be working with the State Board of Higher Education to name an interim president later this month who will begin on campus on July 1 in order to achieve a smooth transition for the campus community and the important work on the retrenchment currently underway.”
