Press Conference to announce Multi-Million Dollar Investment in Middle School Students
PORTLAND - The Oregon University System (OUS) will hold a press conference on Thursday, November 7, to announce
receipt of a multi-million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The press conference will take place at 9:45 a.m. at the main entrance (in front of the main office) of George
Middle School in North Portland (10000 North Burr).
The Grant will establish a GEAR UP Program (Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs),
a collaboration between OUS, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE), the Oregon Student Assistance Commission
(OSAC), and many other partners. Under the Oregon GEAR UP, students in selected economically disadvantaged communities
will receive meaningful assistance in preparing for college success. The grant will support continued teacher development,
help students improve academic readiness for college, and provide millions of dollars in scholarship support for
qualified students.
