Aid for Oregon's College Students Subject of News Conference
A coalition of Oregon educational organizations will gather on Wednesday, October 23 to make a major announcement
regarding the future of the Oregon Opportunity Grant.
The press conference will take place in Salon 1 of the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower (921 SW 6th) at 10:45
a.m.
Leadership from Western Oregon University, Portland Community College, Warner Pacific, the Oregon Student Association
and the Oregon Student Assistance Commission will join Oregon University System Chancellor Richard Jarvis for the
announcement.
The Oregon Opportunity Grant is the only state-supported financial aid program for Oregon's college students. Administered
by the Oregon Student Assistance Commission, the Grant provided aid to over 15,000 students this past year. The
combined effect of reduction in general fund allocations and the passage of measure 19 has resulted in the combined
loss of 3,600 awards and a reduction of the amount of support down to 11% of the cost of attendance. In response,
a statewide coalition of higher education partners was created to increase the amount of funding for this program.
Coalition partners include the Oregon Community College Association, Oregon Independent Colleges Association, Oregon
Student Association, Oregon Student Assistance Commission and the Oregon University System.
