Higher Ed Board Meets at Southern Oregon University

PORTLAND -- The Oregon State Board of Higher Education will hold a regular meeting Thursday, Oct. 19 and Friday, Oct. 20 on the campus of Southern Oregon University in Ashland.

The board's agenda includes a series of committee meetings and a campus visitation at SOU.

Highlighting agenda items will be discussion of long-range plans to enhance engineering education in Oregon. Earlier this week, the Oregon University System proposed an eight-year plan totaling $85 million. The plan aims to double the number of engineering and computer science graduates by building upon existing strengths in engineering and computer science at all Oregon public universities. It would make strategic investments in new faculty and staff, sponsored research, scholarship/assistantship support and facilities, using both state and non-state funds.

The engineering proposal will discussed during a joint meeting of the Board's Budget and Finance and System Strategic Planning committees at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the Rogue River Rooms of SOU's Stevenson Union. A final decision request is expected when the full Board meets in regular session at 10 a.m. Friday.

Other agenda items for the meeting include the proposals to name two buildings in the new Center for the Visual Arts at SOU; acquisition of a 58-unit apartment building by Portland State University; and academic renovation projects at PSU and the University of Oregon.

All sessions are open to the public.
