Interim SOU President Selected
PORTLAND - The current provost at Southern Oregon University has been recommended to serve as SOU's interim president.
Sara Hopkins-Powell was selected for the interim post today by Chancellor Joe Cox, who will present a formal request for her appointment by the Oregon State Board of Higher Education in June. Upon appointment, she will serve until a new president is in place.
A national search will soon be initiated to permanently replace President Stephen Reno, recently chosen to become the new chancellor of the University of New Hampshire.
"We're extremely fortunate to be able to bring Dr. Hopkins-Powell to the interim presidency at SOU," Chancellor Cox said. "She was the unanimous choice of her colleagues and was recommended for the post almost immediately by President Reno. As provost, she has worked closely with the president on many important campus initiatives and has earned broad respect among faculty, students and friends of the university for her acumen and leadership."
The new interim president-designate has served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at SOU since 1996. She joined the SOU faculty in 1993 as assistant provost and professor of political science. She has also held teaching and administrative positions the University of California-Berkeley and the University of California-Davis.
Her experience also includes work in public health with Sutter Memorial Hospital, Sacramento, the California State Department of Developmental Services, Golden Empire Health Systems Agency, Sacramento, the Centers for Disease Control, San Francisco and Atlanta, and Atlanta's Northside Hospital.
She earned her B.S. degree from Ohio State University, masters and doctoral degrees from the University of California-Berkeley.
