Online Job Fair Offers Oregon Jobs for Oregon Grads
EUGENE -- Oregon's public universities and the state's business community are teaming up on a new way to locate jobs in Oregon for this spring's college graduates.
They've joined forces to develop an on-line job fair called "Oregon Jobs for Oregon Grads." Using a common Web site, businesses and campuses will be able to match job openings with job candidates by simply clicking through listings at www.ojog.uoregon.edu and submitting on-line forms. The site will permit businesses that have a Web site to link directly to the fair. It will give students information on how to apply for jobs, either with an on-line application or with a printed cover letter and resume.
The cosponsors -- including Oregon Chamber Executives, Associated Oregon Industries and the Oregon University System career center directors -- are now contacting businesses statewide urging them to share existing or anticipated job openings. Companies may list as many positions as they want for a fee of $100. The listings will be organized into a special Internet site.
In April the career offices will flood their campuses with information on how to search the listings during the on-line fair May 1 to 5. The message will be targeted to the nearly 12,000 students who are expected to earn both undergraduate and graduate degrees from OUS campuses this spring, plus other recent graduates who want to find employment here in Oregon.
"Nearly 70 percent of our students would like to stay and build their future in Oregon. And even more former graduates would like the opportunity," says Larry Smith, career center director at the University of Oregon, who is coordinating the program among the campuses. "We think this is a win-win idea, having business and higher education join together to put Oregon's talent to work for all of us."
Businesses interested in participating may contact Smith at the UO, Dan Aberg at the Oregon Chamber Executives, or John Metcalf at Associated Oregon Industries. Listing forms must be completed by April 25.
Other participating campus contacts include Sally Click, Eastern Oregon University, La Grande; Joe Holiday, Oregon Institute of Technology, Klamath Falls; Tom Mummerlyn, Oregon State University, Corvallis; Dee Thompson, Portland State University; Sib Farrell, Southern Oregon University, Ashland; and Katherine Harper, Western Oregon University, Monmouth.
