PORTLAND, September 29, 2008 – Governor Kulongoski’s appointment of David V. Yaden, a consultant, volunteer and former agency head, to serve on the Oregon State Board of Higher Education was confirmed on September 25 by the Oregon State Senate. Yaden’s term on the Board will begin on October 1 and continue through June 2012, at which time he will be eligible for re-appointment.

Paul Kelly, president of the Board of Higher Education, said, “David’s wonderfully diverse background in education, the public sector and the business community make him a great asset to the Board and higher education in Oregon. His policy development experience and his thoughtful approach to solving important issues will benefit Oregonians, and help improve higher education in all regards, from access to delivery, and its linkages to a strong state economy and work force.”

A resident of Lake Oswego, Yaden is retired, doing volunteer work, occasional consulting and some writing. He is on the board and was chair of Sightline Institute, a regional sustainability think tank based in Seattle. In recent years he has done volunteer work as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children; done consulting work for Metro and on tax reform and school finance; and is currently chair of the Metro Blue Ribbon Committee for Trails.

“David will be a valuable asset to the Board of Higher Education because of his experience guiding policy at the state and federal level,” said Governor Kulongoski. “He also understands the value of higher education from the perspective of the student, parent and community.”

Previously, Yaden was executive director of policy and planning at Tri-Met from 1995 to 1997 where he was responsible for policy planning and financing of light rail projects, implementation of strategic plans, and for government and public affairs. He was an independent public policy consultant and international environmental advisor from 1991 to 1995.

Yaden served as director of the Oregon Department of Energy from 1987 to 1991; and from 1981 to 1987 worked in various management capacities for Nerco, Inc. He also served as special assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, as chief-of-staff to a U.S. Congressman, and worked in journalism, his own public opinion research firm and in other local government positions from 1967 to 1981. Yaden received a B.A. in Political Science from Portland State University, and did graduate work in government at Claremont Graduate School.
